Active Leadership

President – Ann M. Carterpresident_anncarter

Ann Carter became the 4th member of her family to join the Junior League when she entered in 1999 in Lynchburg, VA.  She transferred her membership from there to the JL of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, VA in 2006, and then to the JL of Lancaster in 2010.  Ann has enjoyed a meaningful career of voluntarism in the Junior League; having dutifully chaired 7 different committees over her tenure, she now embarks upon her 6th year as a dedicated member of Junior League Boards.

Ann was born a proud “Army brat” in Fort Leavenworth, KS, and her family moved every 3-4 years following her father’s 30-year career as a soldier and Army Infantry Officer.  Home base became the tiny historic town of Clifton, VA outside of Washington, D.C. upon her father’s retirement in 1986.

While the majority of her family is from middle and southern-coastal parts of Georgia, Ann has lived the majority of her life in Virginia, having earned a B.A. Cum Laude in Sociocultural Anthropology with a Spanish minor from Sweet Briar College in 1997.  She worked for 11 years supporting philanthropic efforts and special events programming for her alma mater, and then later for Norfolk Academy – in the Alumnae and Development Offices, respectively.  Ann and her husband, Michael, live in Lititz and stay young chasing their son, Stewart, who spends his busy days in Kindergarten at Reidenbaugh Elementary School.

“The woman who joins the Junior League is making a proactive investment in self and community. As she aligns herself locally with like-minded women who wish to develop each other as trained civic leaders through community voluntarism, she also merges into an empowered female network of 291 Leagues in 4 countries, totaling more than 150,000 volunteers who are united in affecting positive, sustainable impact on an international scale.  It is a powerful and conscientious decision that a woman makes when she joins the Junior League; I am proud to have carried on my family’s tradition by making that important decision 17 years ago, and am deeply honored to serve our community and our League in this way, and to see the JLL into its 94th year of service to Lancaster.

The JLL welcomes all women to join us – we are an organization that MAKES things happen! We plan strategically, and that process pushes forward our vision for Mission-driven impact so we are always, in part, thinking in the future tense.  Because of this, our Issue Based Community Impact focus areas – “Girls + STEM” and “Children Aging Out of Foster Care” – are thriving.  We are prioritizing new community partnerships and innovative efforts to ensure that young women are inspired to pursue STEM freely, and that children who are in desperate need of a sense of family and unconditional support, know that someone in their community truly believes in them and wants them to succeed.”
