FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Junior League of Lancaster ‘Opening Up’ Its 2022-2023 League Year with Can Opener Donation Initiative to Kickoff New Nutrition Insecurity Focus Area

LANCASTER, PA – October 26, 2022 – The Junior League of Lancaster PA, Inc. (JLL), an organization of women whose mission is to advance women’s leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training, is excited to announce it is ‘opening’ up its 2022-2023 League year by collecting manual can openers for the Lancaster Power Packs Project in support of its new Issue-Based Community Impact (IBCI) focus area of nutrition insecurity.

The JLL’s goal is to collect 1,500 brand new manual can openers by Tuesday, November 1st. Donations will be accepted until Tuesday, November 1st; please contact the Community Impact Committee at communityimpact@jllancaster.org to arrange for a physical pick-up or drop-off. Financial contributions will also be accepted to support the campaign via the Junior League of Lancaster website at www.jllancaster.org/openup. A $10.00 gift will provide three families with this necessary tool to combat hunger.

This incredible project ‘opens up’ two years of research and discussion, as the Community Impact Committee met to approve the adoption of nutrition insecurity as the new JLL focus area, which was officially implemented this League year.

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the rate of food insecurity in Lancaster County, and with many of the public health initiatives, which supported food needs, now lapsed, increasing hunger and food insecurity is a major concern.

The nutrition insecurity focus area is the JLL multi-tiered community initiative with the goal of creating a more nutrition-secure Lancaster. Through an integrated, multi-faceted approach, including direct volunteer opportunities, educational trainings, and fundraising endeavors, this program will positively impact the health and wellness of families in our area by focusing on nutrition, food security and availability in an equitable and accessible way.

ABOUT THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF LANCASTER

Established in 1923, the Junior League of Lancaster is an organization of women whose mission is to advance women’s leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training. Junior League members scan the needs of our community, conduct issue-based research and identify areas where we can be most impactful in our local ecosystem. As of June 2022, our current initiatives include Nutrition Insecurity, a newly adopted Issue-Based Community Impact (IBCI) focus area, to combat the lack of access to healthy and nutrient-rich food and improve nutrition knowledge and dietary habits across all populations in Lancaster County. For nearly a century, we have identified the needs of our area and have rallied to provide meaningful and lasting improvements. Our purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
